1 in 3 couples in the UK have a relationship which started online! It’s not too surprising, considering that 7 million of us Brits are registered on dating sites, looking for love.
First dates can be exciting – and a bit nerve-wracking! Taking extra precautions to make sure you stay safe can give you one less thing to worry about, so you can focus on enjoying your date and letting romance blossom instead.
Online dating safety
Here are some top tips to bear in mind when going on a date with someone you’ve met online:
- Tell a friend or family member where you’re going and check in with them once you’ve arrived. Let them know roughly what time you expect to be home by and let them know you’ll message once the date is over.
- Meet in a public place. If your date tries to convince you to meet somewhere more private, this should raise alarm bells. If they can’t respect your decision to want to meet somewhere public, do you really want to be going on a date with them in the first place?
- Don’t drink excessively. You don’t want alcohol clouding your judgement and leaving you feeling vulnerable.
- Think twice before going back to someone’s home if they extend the invitation. It’s only the first date, after all. If they’re a keeper, you’ll be invited back in the future!
